Today’s unprecedented heat wave expected to cause statewide blackouts for residents in NSW, VIC and QLD will leave people with their lights out and sweltering in the dark, with a small percentage of Australian homeowners who are able to keep their lights on and stay calm and cool during the course of this devastating heat wave due to home energy storage and backup power.

“While power outages are expected across NSW, QLD and VIC due to generation capacity, recurring incidences and blackouts means Australians are begging for more independence from the grid, and backup power has become more than a luxury; it’s now a necessity,” says Chris Williams, Managing Director of Natural Solar.

Natural Solar has received almost 100,000 inquiries from Australian residents seeking to install battery power and home storage solutions. 92% of these inquiries came from QLD, VIC, and NSW residents. The number of inquiries is expected to surge following the three-day heat wave, and anticipated blackouts.

“Australian consumers are reactive; after these events there is typically a spike in inquiries for storage solutions, which have a direct correlation to the areas in and around the blackout zones. We saw this as a direct result of the South Australian blackouts occurring in late 2016, and are expecting to see a similar response when this heatwave concludes,” commented Mr Williams.

“People are craving certainty and stability when it comes to their power sources, and the uncertainty and ageing structure of the Australian electricity network is causing more and more households to make the move to home energy storage. When the network can’t keep up with high demand, particularly during incidences like a heat wave, houses with a simple home battery storage unit installed have the ability to work independently from the grid, acting as their own mini residential power stations. Home energy and battery power is almost a home insurance policy for consumers,” said Mr Williams.
