A crisis calls for solutions

Australian households are facing unprecedented increases in the cost of their energy. At first the energy crisis appeared staggering when benchmark prices rose by 20%, then energy chiefs predicted prices could increase by 35% in 2023, and soon after that it was reported that the Australian Energy Regulator warned the government that price increases could surge past 50%.

These dire forecasts for household energy costs come on the back of what has been described as ‘the perfect storm’ of contributing factors, including a delayed and chaotic energy transition, a global supply crisis driven by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the accelerated rate of coal-fired power plant closures.

Many fear prices will reach the stratospheric levels currently being experienced in parts of Europe and a survey by Energy Consumers Australia has already found that confidence in Australia’s energy system is falling just as fast as the prices are rising.

If the message wasn’t clear before, it’s clear now, the only way you’ll get control of your electricity bill is to generate and manage the electricity yourself with a home solar-plus-storage system, an electric vehicle (EV), and the Heartbeat at the centre of it all.

Electrify everything

Millions of Australians have already taken power into their own hands by installing solar on their rooftops. But solar is not the complete story.

The dumb solar system of the past used to push much of the energy it produces back into the electricity network in the middle of day when the home was empty and power prices low. With Heartbeat adding smarts to your solar system, it can help you put the energy you produce on your roof to good use, delivering full value and true energy independence.

To get the kind of energy independence that you can depend on, and real resilience to volatile electricity bills and unreliable supply, what is required is a smart energy home management system that integrates and harmonises the key devices in your home to maximise the power your panels provide.

Those devices include your solar
battery, reverse-cycle air
conditioning often called a heat
pump – and EV charger.

After all, there’s no point letting your surplus solar go to waste while you’re standing at the petrol pump being robbed by fossil fuel companies.

With a moderately sized solar system, most households can charge their EVs with at least 50% solar energy, and much more with a home battery system in the mix. Rewiring Australia’s Saul Griffith’s research estimates that if
Australians charged their EVs with their rooftop solar and home battery
systems they would save approximately 67% in fuel costs by 2030.

What is more, emerging technology means that your EV can become a battery on wheels. An EV battery is typically three to four times the size of a standard residential solar battery. And since our cars spend the majority of their time parked, your EV battery can soak up the solar energy you produce, allowing you to drive free and clean. And the EV battery can also be discharged into your home once the sun goes down.

The notion of a smart home used to seem futuristic, but now you may as well be living in the past if you haven’t thought about smartening up. Not only does the efficient management of your solar energy help to take the sting out of the cost-of-living crisis, but it also helps to cut your carbon emissions too.

Get smart with Heartbeat

Developed by the 1KOMMA5 engineering team in Germany, the Heartbeat is a cutting-edge Internet of Things (IoT) device and platform. And it is a small device, set to make a powerful impact.

In the past, a rooftop PV system, solar battery, heat pump, and EV charger would each be an independent system – provided by different manufacturers. Getting them to work together was near impossible, requiring both a high level of technical expertise and vigilance from the homeowner to manually control what was being used or charged, and when.

The Heartbeat uses smart technology to link these devices together, and through the Heartbeat Platform automate the energy flows from the rooftop, to and from the grid, and in the home to make the best of your solar energy.

Heartbeat uses your home’s internet connection
to link together your devices, speaking their
language, and harmonising your home energy

This allows you to select the best solar system and battery, EV charger, and heat pump provided by 1KOMMA5, and integrate them into one system, accessible via a single app.

1KOMMA5 has selected devices from manufacturers that are leaders in their fields for integration into Heartbeat. Offering high quality, performance, long-lived warranties, and competitive pricing, the impressive list of Heartbeat-compatible suppliers can equip your home with the energy system to meet your needs.

And the list of leading manufacturers that the Heartbeat can control is always growing, delivering you choice. The engineers at 1KOMMA5 are also on the constant lookout at cutting edge new technologies as they come onto the market – meaning your smart, green home can be kept ahead of the curve.

The installation of the Heartbeat has been designed to be simple. Once plugged in and commissioned by your 1KOMMA5 installer – all in under 15 minutes – it will link with the devices in your home and deliver you instant oversight and control via the Heartbeat app.

Smart trading

It will hardly come as a surprise that energy markets are in flux. The Heartbeat Platforms brings order to the chaos and can take advantage of price fluctuations, discharging your solar energy into the grid when prices are high, and making the most of periods when cheap solar is flooding the grid.

Heartbeat uses a self-learning algorithm and weather forecasts, to understand how the solar energy production from your rooftop can be best utilized in your home. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is put to work by the Heartbeat Platform to figure out when is best to charge or discharge your devices.

While designed for automation, delivering you peace-of-mind without the hassle, you can take the power of the Heartbeat into your own hands.

You can set different comfort
settings by prioritizing the charging of different devices, like the solar battery, the EV charger, or the heat pump.

A range of EV charging strategies can also be set by you, depending on your daily needs. And the solar battery can be controlled according to what may
lie ahead, like a scorching hot day or a severe storm, which might threaten
supply from the electricity network.

Australia today is experiencing the trifecta of volatile and increasing prices,
carbon emissions that are proving difficult to bring down, and severe
storms, heatwaves, fires, and floods threatening the security of energy
supply. Heartbeat delivers on the “energy trilemma” by putting the best
solar and smart energy devices on the market to use, in a single, seamless
system in your home.

Proven results

With some of the world’s best engineers and a long-established position as a leader in the global energy transition, it should come as no surprise that Heartbeat was designed and developed in Germany. It was also where the Heartbeat hardware and Platform was first put to the test.

1KOMMA5 installed Heartbeat in a home with a mid-sized rooftop solar system and home battery in Germany’s west. Over the course of a year, the solar energy production and consumption was monitored and modelled. And while Germany is known for its engineering it is not for its abundant sunshine, yet still the savings stacked up.

Set up

When only the home’s heat pump was powered by the solar and battery, managed by Heartbeat, savings of €72 ($111) were achieved over 12 months. When only an EV charger was hooked up to the system, those savings
increased to €198 ($307). When both the heat pump and EV charging were
powered and managed together, the savings soared to €262 ($406). And all
from one single, small device.

Annual Savings w/ HEMS

The results speak for themselves. As more smart electric devices are hooked up to the Heartbeat and linked to the Heartbeat Platform, the savings increase. And within a single year, the savings head up into the hundreds.

With energy prices going nowhere but up, these savings will only increase over time. Electricity prices predicted to double in a matter of years and prodigious sunshine is common throughout much of Australia, the potential savings could very well head to the thousands of dollars over a single year.

The Heartbeat can help you create a smart home energy management system today. Choose to live on the solar energy you generate, save money, and be sure of your clean energy supply long into the future.
