Tesla Powerwall – Most Common Questions

We answer your most frequently asked questions

We get asked a lot of questions at Natural Solar, especially since the recent release of the Tesla Powerwall – and we couldn’t be more delighted about it!

The Tesla Powerwall is a revolutionary new addition to the solar energy landscape and we firmly believe that the more our customers understand about it, the better.

Here are our answers to some of the questions that pop up most often:

What is the Tesla Powerwall?

The Tesla Powerwall Home Battery is a state of the art Tesla battery system for residential and light commercial applications that enables the storage of energy such as Solar Power. Commonly, the Tesla Powerwall can be used to store solar energy during the day for use at night time. It can also provide backup power in case of a grid outage. Depending on where one lives and the electricity rates in that area, Powerwall can potentially save homeowners money by shifting energy consumption from high to low rate periods.

What differentiates the Tesla Powerwall from other battery products in the market?

Over the last 12 years, Tesla has developed great expertise around usage and safe deployment of lithium ion batteries in electric vehicles. That depth of knowledge is leveraged for the Tesla Powerwall. In addition, the Tesla Powerwall is wall mounted, great looking, low cost and Tesla provides limited warranty for up to 10 years. The Powerwall is completely safe, offers high performance, and reliable operation for a homeowner. Unlike other battery systems in the market, Tesla Powerwall, when paired with a compatible inverter is easy to setup and install and will continue to work seamlessly without any intervention from the homeowner. Natural Solar aims to deliver a great user experience to the end customer and help make renewable energy accessible and easy to use for everyone.

Can one go completely off the grid using the Tesla Powerwall?

Yes. The Tesla Powerwall can be used to go completely off-grid provided one has a power generation source (PV, generator, or wind power) and a compatible inverter. At this moment, SolarEdge does not support off-grid capability but Fronius does.
The number of Tesla Powerwalls needed to enable a site to go off-grid will depend on the site’s solar production and energy use. The site owner should contact an off-grid specialist for sizing the system accurately according to their needs.

Is the Tesla Powerwall safe?

Yes, the Tesla Powerwall architecture has been built from the ground up to deliver multiple levels of protection. In addition, a highly sophisticated Battery Management System and liquid thermal control system ensures the batteries will always function in a safe manner. The Tesla Powerwall is tested and certified to local market safety standards.

These costs are based on the SA Power network in Adelaide but prices may vary depending on your circumstances. This comparison assumes a general energy usage of 4000kWh/year for a residential customer on Energy Locals Time of Use Tariff – (TOU – Peak, Off-Peak & Solar Sponge).

The reference price is set by the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) for a financial year in relation to electricity supply to residential customers in the distribution region and is based on an assumed annual usage amount. Any difference between the reference price and the unconditional price of a plan is expressed as a percentage more or less than the reference price. The terms of any conditional discounts are shown, along with any further difference between the reference price and the discount applied if a condition is met, expressed as a percentage more or less than the reference price.
